Who needs stabilisers?

Yesterday I was a very proud father. Poppy managed to ride her bike; peddling, steering, balancing and braking all without the assistance of stabilisers. In fact she’s never used stabilisers. You may recall that about two years ago I bought her a balance bike (pictured left). After an uncertain start, she took to using it like a natural but given that she’s grown somewhat since then I figured I’d buy her an early birthday present of a new bike. Two weeks ago we took a trip to Halfords and purchased a pink 16” girl’s mountain bike. The Carrera Luna is pretty well specified for a child’s bike featuring an aluminium frame, front fork suspension and chunky off-road tyres. We got the bike home and after setting it up properlyCarrera Luna (thanks Halfords… you need to train your bike guys to tune and balance the brakes properly) Poppy took it for a spin. She was very nervous given that it was much bigger than the balance bike, but she managed to scoot along, and over the next few evenings got the hang of balancing like before. I gradually worked her up to keeping one foot on a pedal and then getting her to balance for longer and longer runs (downhill is obviously easier for this). Yesterday she took the bike to the village’s play area, balancing the bike on the way there. Once we got there I convinced her to briefly put both feet on the pedals whilst rolling down the hill just to see if she could do it. Well, she could and promptly pedalled off.

When I purchased the original balance bike there wasn’t much choice. Most of them were either wooden affairs or very expensive. I opted for the Hudora which included a steel frame, rear brake and chunky air filled tyres. Now, given that there’s a far greater choice of similar bikes around now I can’t recommend this model. The brake was next to useless because once the tyres were inflated, they would warp the plastic wheels unevenly making it impossible to calibrate the brakes accurately. Also, the brake calliper would catch on Poppy’s legs as she pushed herself along. Anyway, if you are interested in balance bikes in general, click through to the Hudora one on Amazon using the link to the right and see the others they have on offer.

“The Curse of Thai” and other stories

We’re back! (sort of). We’re back at the gites anyway, recovering from our manic few days at Disneyland Paris. We stayed at hotel Cheyenne this time, a nice cowboy themed hotel which was much better than Hotel Santa Slum where we have previously stayed.

Disney standards however were not up to their usual high standards unfortunately… The rooms are in need of renovation with peeling wallpaper, televisions that don’t really get a signal even on the internal information channels, dodgy electrics which make fizzy sounds, and flickering lights – perhaps that’s all part of the American Western theme?? They also forgot to put any towels in our room on the last day… tut tut. The rest of the trip was very memorable though. We started off well going straight to Pirates of the Caribbean. It was a bit dark, but Poppy enjoyed herself:

There were of course two slightly adjoined families taking part in this trip, the Shinglers and the Hewitts/Nguyens. Myself and Thai decided to leave behind the under-height ones and their baby sitters to test out a couple of the more interesting rides in the park. Starting with Space Mountain, we queued for about 20 minutes before wondering why the ride was quiet…. yup, it had broken down. The next day we tried our luck with with Big Thunder Mountain and that broke down after about a 30 minute wait. Hmm, our fortunes did pick up as we managed a ride on Rock’n’Roller Coaster and Space Mountain eventually. Anyhows I’m blaming Thai for them breaking down – I’m convinced he had a word with the park management as he was a bit nervous Smile.

Back to the kids and Poppy enjoyed herself lots, taking her autograph book and shoving it in the face of every character she could find.

Or even just shoving her face in chocolate mousse.

We managed to see lots of performances and shows including the night-time parade, a Playhouse Disney live show, and best of all, a ‘Welcome Princess Frog-Snogger’ parade as viewed from the windows of Walt’s American Diner on Main Street. Our table had prime viewing over Main Street as the parade passed below us, and despite young madam’s protests that she wanted to be down on the road watching it, she liked watching it from that vantage point really.

And speaking of that meal out, it was well posh innit. I had a burger (more on burgerage later) topped with peppers and foie gras. Now…. I’d never had that before so thought I’d give it a go. I’ve given it a go and I’ll cross it off the list. My best description is to liken it to eating a slice of tenderised slug. The burger and lattice fries were amazing though as was the chocolate cake and brownie ice cream I had for dessert. Sadly the chef wouldn’t cook the pigeon who was sat on a nest outside the window. Shame, it was quite plump.

Shooting Wobots, or “Buzz Lightyear’s Laser Blast” as it is correctly known was the holiday’s most popular ride for all concerned I believe with babies Joseph and Tyson becoming obsessed with Buzz. I managed a decent score of around 139000 when sitting with Poppy, however with Joseph controlling the direction lever my score plummeted to just over the 100000 mark. Poppy’s high score was just over 3000 – a definite improvement over the last trip to Disney. Joseph’s other highlights included It’s a flippin’ monotonous small world, and the Dumbo ride (on which I thought I saw the mother-in-law but it turned out to be a false alarm).

And finally, I give you the saddest news of all. You may remember my fascination with the culinary genius that was The Pizzaburger. Well, some eejit at Disney has decided that they no longer need to sell such a product and have converted the perfectly perfect Buzz Lightyear’s Pizza Planet restaurant in to an all you can eat pizza, pasta and salad buffet. R.I.P. The Pizzaburger:

I made up for that disappointment by eating five none-pizza’d burgers in two days. With chips. And Ice creams, and an all-you-can-eat buffet at the Lucky Nugget Saloon. And Chicken Tikka strips with rice at the Hakkuna Matata Restaurant. And a few hundred complimentary breakfast pain-au-chocolat. With Nutella. Oh, and there was the extra few chocolate brownies I sneaked out of the Lucky Nugget wrapped in napkins and placed carefully in the pushchair. And the coconut chicken I had on the first night too. Mmmm, that was in the Blue Lagoon restaurant next to Pirates of the Caribbean. Can anyone work out how far I need to run to burn that lot off?

Butterflies and Candy Floss

Today was the annual school fete and top of Poppy’s to-do list was getting her face painted and buying some candy floss… both of which involved covering her face. Joseph also had a couple of turns on the bouncy castle and ate far too many sugary stuffs but I’m pretty sure they both enjoyed themselves. And as for the photo, she insisted on the pose.

Things I’ve learnt today

1. Children under 2 + Sand = a mess. If he wasn’t eating the sand, he was rubbing it in his eyes, or crawling as fast as he could to the nearest rock pool.

2. Don’t forget to put sun cream on yourself

3. When taking children to the beach, always use your wife’s car – it will get filthy.

4. If bathing the children t0 clean off the sand after a beach visit, don’t put them both in the bath together because the younger one will lay a floater causing the elder one to scream.

Where have I been? (and Rainbow Cake)

March 21st, 2010 3 Comments »

Well I’ve been busy, okay? My two final Open University courses started at the beginning of Feb as I mentioned before, and I’ve spending most of my spare time completing coursework. I still have a final project to complete for one of the courses which I’ll get out of the way in the next week or so, then that just leaves two more pieces of coursework to be completed in May / June / July… and that’s all.

In other news… Joseph / Joe / Joey / Joey-joe-joe has had his passport photo taken ready for our trip to France later this year. He looks a bit gormless but it is an accurate likeness. The ferry and stopover hotels are all booked and I hope to have Disney all sorted by the end of the week. We have our new Euro GB style number plates ready for the Oli/Tor-bus and I really must remember to order the European travel kit things with the torch, triangle, first aid kit and stuff in…

My copy of ‘All Aliens Like Burgers’ arrived on Friday too but I haven’t had chance to read it yet. I’m saving that for April when there’s a natural gap in coursework… I’m struggling to get chance to read my monthly subscription of PC Pro magazine too so a full book will be more of a challenge.

And finally… I promised Poppy that I’d make her a rainbow cake for her birthday (no, not gay pride), which isn’t until June. But considering I’d not got a plan together on how I was going to make this, I thought it best to perform a test run. Vicky is in the process of decorating the bathroom this weekend so I thought what better way to keep the children occupied than a bit of baking. So here’s how it goes: I made a mega batch of cake mixture… 300g of marg/sugar/flour and 6 eggs. I split the mixture in to six portions and added food colouring as needed to each one.. Purple, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red (I had to mix some of them myself). Then I spooned each colour in to a cake tin, one colour on top of the other, and did the same for a second cake tin. Bake for 45 minutes and turn them out….

Finally we sandwiched the two together with blue butter icing, then covered it in more butter icing to finish.. Mmmmm count those E numbers. Poppy then decorated the cake with an entire tub of pink sprinkles. I shall learn from my mistakes in making this, firstly I will put the red in first and make the rainbow up from that direction, because it bends the wrong way in my cake. Secondly, I might just make one massive cake instead of two so the rainbow effect is more pronounced. I will also put more effort in to the next one to make it look more like a birthday cake. Will have to get a new icing piper for that methinks seeing as the last one fell apart.

I’ll leave you with these last two photos of the finished product, even if Poppy does look a little unsure what she’s let herself in for.
