Walkers Crisps: Frank Roast Dinner

February 3rd, 2011 No Comments »

Today’s flavour is courtesy of Frank Skinner, obviously that means Frank Roast Dinner, or just Roast Chicken Dinner flavour. They tasted like roast chicken crisps with gravy on, so apart from roast chicken crisps not normally tasting like actual roast chicken I suppose they are pretty accurate. They’re nice but nothing outstanding here I’m afraid, I’m hoping the next two will throw something interesting in to the mix much like the American Cheeseburger flavour did last year.

Walkers Crisps: Stephen Fry Up

February 2nd, 2011 No Comments »

Last year, to commemorate the World Cup, Walkers released a number of regionalised crisp flavours. These ranged from the exotic Kangaroo, to the more local Welsh Rarebit. Most of these flavours were easily obtainable from our local supermarkets, but the Welsh, Scottish and Irish flavours were sold in their respective countries. Thanks to the efforts of Uncle Paddy we got hold of the Irish Stew flavour and Steve* managed to source the Scottish Haggis. This year Walkers have released just 4 special flavours to raise money for Comic Relief. Today I tried the “Stephen Fry Up” flavour, which is billed as a Full English Fry Up flavour. It’s a very bland flavour, not offensive, and it mainly tastes of egg yolk and tomato to me – almost exactly as I remember the Builder’s Breakfast special edition crisps tasting a couple of years ago. Well, three more flavours to go…

* Steve is a “forced work acquiantance” as he would put it.

Baguelette?

The Baguelette… it would be an omelette, but in a baguette? Just a thought.

Lasagne Sandwich (Lasagnwich?)

You heard right, today’s culinary delight is Tesco’s new Lasagne Sandwich. It looks something like this:

Lasagne Sandwich

It was indeed nice. Inside was the expected minced beef in a tomato sauce, topped with a large sheet of pasta and finished off with a creamy cheese sauce. It did taste just like lasagne, but in a sandwich. For those nutritionally minded, here’s the breakdown:

Lasagne Sandwich Nutrition

That’s right, it is only 38% of your daily fat allowance. It got me thinking though of other possibilities for lunch-time snack versions of larger meals. The only one I can come up with so far is Wrapatouille – made from the finest ratatouille placed inside a tortilla. Any other suggestions at all please? The best idea may even make it in to reality and on to this blog…

Energy Gum?

Since I’ve noticed a lot of my family’s blogs concern food as their primary subject, I thought I’d join in over the next couple of days. I’ll start with chewing gum… I discovered this little gem in Lidl:

JetGum Energy

Yes, that’s right, JETgum Energy, fortified with Guarana, Caffeine, and Green Tea extracts. It tastes like Airwaves chewing gum mixed with tooti-fruiti bubble gum so quite refreshing, and it wakes you up too. Only 45p a packet… There’s no mention on the packet of the actual caffeine content but I’d estimate it to be about a quarter of a Red Bull.

In other food news, I had a go at making my favourite French sweet/dessert: Macarons au Chocolat. This was from a packet mix I purchased whilst on holiday. Took me flipping ages, a lot of effort, and they looked nothing like the picture. Still, they tasted exactly as I’d hoped. Yum.
