Cold days… warm cats

December 2nd, 2009 3 Comments »

A nice cold start to December yesterday and the first time this Winter I have needed to de-ice the car in the morning. We even put the fire on in the evening. Oh well that means it is time to put the tree and lights up again, it doesn’t seem long ago that I took them down though. Anyway, as I have banished my cat to the garage until I can find a solution to her floor/urination problem I felt a little guilty when I fed her in the mornings and she’d perched herself on top of the boiler feed hot water pipes…. and clawed at them as she stretched. So to save me the job of re-insulating the pipes I have invested in a nice new ca bed for her. Oh ok, being me it isn’t a normal cat bed, it has an integrated heated blanket in the base keeping her nice and toasty through the freezing nights this winter. For thoseĀ interested, I purchased it from a company called Petnap (www.petnap.co.uk) but instead of buying from their website, I found that the same company soldĀ the same products on ebay for less, so I saved myself a tenner. My power meter advises it takes less than 13 watts on average and I’ve set it to heat over night only (she can just get up and do some exercise in the day if she’s cold). Have I gone too far with my pet based gadgetry?

Gadget time! This time it’s the feline related Sureflap RFID cat flap.

What’s so special about this cat flap? WT@ is RFID I hear you say? Well I shall tell you.. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) can be thought of a replacement for a bar code – a miniature micro-chip that emits a unique code when stimulated by a special reader device.. however where it differs from a bar code is that it is contact-less and doesn’t require line-of-sight to be read. So you can embed a microchip inside something. Many shop security systems use RFID tags to prevent theft, and so does the Oyster card that many London travellers should be familiar with. Tinkerbell has a microchip embedded in the back of her neck between her shoulder blades and this cat flap can detect and read it. If any other cat attempts to get through the cat flap, regardless of whether they also have a microchip, the flap will not open.. Tinkerbell’s identification number is hopefully unique! This so far seems to work a lot better than the last techie cat flap I purchased (a Staywell electromagnetic one) which needed a special dongle to be attached to her collar, and is certainly better than the cat flap that I replaced today (a Staywell passive magnetic flap) which didn’t even let Tinks in with the special collar dongle.

All the effort with that flap is however wasted unless I fitted a second flap allowing her to actually get out of the house and in to the garage where the Sureflap is. So I got a bog standard Staywell one from Argos and spent the afternoon drilling out a hole for it to go in. I’m hoping that all of this effort will reduce our cat litter bill and more importantly reduce the smell that fills the house every morning. She has used both flaps so I know she can get through both ways – now the next step will be to see if she’ll go through without being pushed from behind…..

Cat Stress

February 6th, 2009 2 Comments »

So Tinkerbell, how was your day? Sit down, relax, put your tail up. How about a back rub? What about lighting this nice lavender candle? Forget about where your next meal is coming from, don’t worry about your catnip habit… relax. Stupid cat. The vet has diagnosed her with stress… I’ll give her something to stress about if she keeps soaking my carpets! Anyone know a good violin bow maker?

Stupid Cat. Again.

I decided to start chucking the cat out during the day as she was starting to go a bit stir crazy. She’s pretty much refusing to leave the house because of the large number of other strange cats around… and there’s been one or two little puddles of smelly liquid found around the house too. Anyway, this morning I threw her out and found her again this evening in the garage (she can come and go through the garage catflap as she sees fit, but can’t get in to the house). Somehow she had managed to climb in to the rafters and was moaning to get down.tinks1 So, out came the stepladders and up I went to get her. Only one problem, cats don’t seem to like being picked up when they are balanced on beams so she clung on to the wood for dear life wailing at me. I managed to get her down in the end but now have shredded hands and arms.

Marmaduke the cat will let you do anything you like with him, including sitting him down in a doll sized baby bouncer. I stopped short of the sailor outfit.
