In Search of McBerlin

Berlin - flag on headPhew, I’m back home in Wales now so that must mean it’s time for a record breaking long blog post. After sampling two more energy drinks earlier this week (Take Off.. tastes cheap, and Effect – a good Red Bull contender) I felt I had the energy to take a quick walking tour of Berlin before my flight home. First task was to work out how the train system operates…. and the answer is very smoothly. You buy a ticket, stamp it, and get on the train – the system appears to work on trust with no gates or barriers to check your ticket. Right, so where is McDonalds? I have to try a MaccyDs when I go away just in case they taste different… So my first stop was in the centre of Berlin. No McDonalds, but we did see some massive building called the Reichstag which looked quite impressive.Reichstag This house had a massive front garden well suited to marching around in, and a great big glass dome on top – the queue was sadly too big to wait in on our time limits so we carried on looking for the golden arches. Then we stumbled upon a gate. Not a very good gate cuz it was easy to Brandenburg Gateget through, no bars or wire or anything, and nothing to swing open. It was here we found a Costa Coffee and made use of their convenient facilities… not as satisfying as a McPee though. Time to cast our search net wider I thought, and we went for a little walk around Berlin’s side-streets. And what do you know, we met Charlie who was looking after his checkpoint. He was asking for a €1 fee in exchange for photographs, so I snuck this little piccy while his gun wasn’t visible. Once he’d let us past (we made a run for it) I could smell the fries, the McGoodness was within grasp with only one final obstacle – someone had pCheckpoint Charlieut a bloomin’ great big wall in the way. We walked along it for a while, searching for weaknesses or a way over but I’m guessing this had been tried many times going by the messages written all over it. Some sections were even painted with intricate designs and artwork in order to make it more attractive. There was the occasional sentry tower here and there looming ominously over anyone inspecting the wall and some very gloomy buildings which we learnt later were the SS and Gestapo headquarters at one point.Berlin Wall Finally though, we found a way past the wall and the big yellow M greeted us with a smile. A Big Tasty with Bacon later and all was right with the world. Time to catch the flight home…. Berlin McDonaldsGerman Big Tasty

Party Pooper

Schwarze Dose 28By all accounts the party in Berlin last night wasn’t fun. I was told it was cold, wet, and crammed so full of people that no-one could see what was going on – so I skipped it. I’m sure it’ll be on YouTube later and with better views. Today’s energy drink comes in a minimalist matt black can with the name Schwarze Dose 28 on the side. I can work out that it contains Guarana and something called Q10. It’s bright pink in colour and tastes a bit like pomegranite juice so not one of my favourites.

I’ve also made another purchase this morning quickly before they sold out – they’d already run out of Microsoft teddy bears after 30 minutes of being on sale. So, note to Vicky, I got the up-to-12-months size which was the largest they did.

Ed Hardy Drink“Ed Hardy: The Godfather of tattoo. He introduced color in the art of tattoo 40 years ago.” and now apparantly gives his name to Ed Hardy: The Energy Drink. This one tastes fruitier than usual with a slight sherbert flavour too… quite nice and refreshing! It has the usual mix of caffeine, taurine and alchemist workshop magic from what I can tell (well, it is all written in German).

Berlin Bull

Red Bull Energy ShotSo I find myself in Berlin for a week, and what do you do when you are in Berlin? Why, try out the local energy drinks of course. I won’t be seeing many sights sadly so this is about as interesting as it’ll get on the blog for now. Just around the corner from my hotel is a petrol station and as I walked in looking for a bar of genuine German chocolate (no, didn’t find any) I was confronted with two enormous piles of Red Bull cans, must have measured about 9 foot by 3. I also found a Red Bull energy shot by the counter too. Not cheap though at €2.99 a go… but cheaper than the €4 something they charged for a full can. It was a lot nicer than the Relentless shot I tried a few weeks back with a sweeter taste and has definitly woken me up this morning. The garage stocks quite a number of energy drinks I’ve never seen before along with the usual brands I know – looks like they are big business over here so I’ll try and sample them all before I return.
