The Carnivorous Garden

I already had a Venus Fly Trap in the conservatory but in an attempt to control the large number of flying insects in there I decided a more extreme approach was needed. So, Poppy and I went to the garden centre this morning in search of some fly eating plants. I have planted them in a large pot (with water tray underneath) with carnivorous plant compost.. I managed to find two different types of pitfall traps – “Monkey Cups” (Nepenthes) which you can see hanging over the edges; some variety of the Sarracenia pitcher plant family (in the middle of the pot), and of course I re-potted the Venus Fly Trap. The plant I really wanted was a Sundew, which catch prey by trapping them in a sticky mucus on their leaves and then curling around to make sure lunch doesn’t escape. I could only find some ‘grow your own’ versions of the Sundew so have potted those up. I’ve left a space in the main pot for a Sundew when/if I grow or find one. Fairy cakes et al

Poppy has been a busy girl. Yesterday she made pink fairy cakes and today she decorated them. She’s also been keeping an eye on her baby brother for us, making sure he doesn’t drop off to sleep by beeping his nose and shouting ‘boo’. And another recent interest of hers is the’ thing next to baby juvveff’s bottom’. We finally got the Mothercare order today – Joseph has a mattress for his cot and enough bottles to keep us going through the night. I’m working on a video which will be Joseph’s First Week, hopefully get it done for tomorrow but have a little bit more footage I’d like to put in it first. All the visitors have left now so it’s just us until the weekend. Tasks left for me this week include going to the registry office and registering Joseph’s birth, taking Poppy swimming, and sorting out another child trust fund.

DIY News
The decorating of the hall, landing and stairs is finally completed (apart from an upstairs light fitting). I’ve laid the laminate flooring, a brown oak (as opposed to the yellowy oak colour) colouring and have also finished fitting the edging which is being held in place with a ton of heavy books as we speak. I fitted a set of coat hooks in the study and a show rack fresh from Argos in there too so now we can keep the hallway clear. We were getting quite a buildup of clothing in the hallway which stopped us from opening the front door at times, let alone get a large pram out of the house.

And they're out

Yesterday I picked Vicky and Joseph up from the hospital and home they came! Much earlier than I’d planned so we were missing a few essentials like bottles. Anyway, we had a pretty good first night – no tears from either party, he just makes a feeble gurgling noise when he’s hungry. Anyway, on to the important stuff, not long until Eurovision – go UK!

And he's out

Joseph William Shingler, born 15:21 and weighing in at 7lb 3 (or 4) ounces…. he’s somewhere in between so his weight varies depending on your rounding! We got to hospital at 8am this morning, and due to delays we were sat waiting until around 2:30pm when Vicky was finally prepped for surgery. He came out ok though and seems quite healthy so far fingers crossed. Anyway I’m finally home and have (about 15 minutes ago) got Poppy in to bed. She’s enjoying having a baby brother and chose him a teddy bear (with a noisy bottom… which is a pull cord playing nursary rhymes). I’ve taken some video footage as well as the photos so I’ll post up a video as soon as I get chance to edit it down. For now, though, here’s a link to the photos which are on facebook. I’ve made them public so you don’t need an account: Click here for the album
