It's on the wall, and through the ceiling.

Yay I finally have a telly on the wall. I’ve also put some wall lights up and put the centre speaker on a bracket.. it makes an awesome home cinema set up with a sofa in the prime viewing position so despite wifely concerns it is very comfy to watch especially when reclining the sofa.

In other news, my sister is visiting for a few days along with her boyfriend Nick who left earlier this afternoon. Emily will stay on a few days to lap up a taste of Welsh life.

Ooo ooo and in other other news, our conservatory roof has a leak. I discovered it this morning when getting some toys out of there for Poppy. The rain was getting in through a ‘device’ which had been mounted in a cut-out in the plastic roofing. I’m presuming the sealant had worn a bit so I’ve bunged some more around it by leaning out of Poppy’s bedroom window. We’ll find out in the next rain shower whether or not it has worked.

The new telly has arrived. It’s big. I’ve already managed to hide some cables behind the wall ready for when it is mounted above the fireplace.. just need to work out what to do with the power cable because it’s a figure-8 plug not the kettle plug I had presumed so I need more bits. I’ve even run a USB cable up there in case I want to put a camera above the screen and just for Vicky, I’ve managed to get hold of some Wii sensor bar extension leads so the Wii can work on it too. I’ve decided to hire a company to wall mount the telly instead of a DIY job. I figured although I could do it, I’d never be 100% sure that I’d done it quite right but as the company I’m hiring have alledgedly done others in the village then I’m hoping they know what they are doing… and they aren’t that expensive either.

Here’s the situation so far:

More speed

I saw an article in PC Pro magazine last week about a new little device called the iPlate (see http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/209976/bts-broadbandboosting-iplate-goes-on-sale.html ) which connects in to the master BT socket and is supposed to deliver speed improvements of up to 25%. After doing a bit more reading it mentions that all it does is isolate the bell wire within the socket so as the now defunct 2 copper wires which used to supply the ring noise to ye olde telephones are no longer able to collect interference… this turns out to be wires 3 and 4. Not willing to fork out for an iPlate if that really is all it does, I decided to yank those wires out myself and blimey, it really does work.

Before meddling, the modem synced at 3.5Mbps tops, and speedtest.net reported a 3Mbps connection. After the change, I get a 4.1Mbps sync, and a real download speed of 3.6Mbps…. a 20% improvement. Anyone who wants to read more on how to do this, check out: http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/broadbandspeed.html

*Disclaimer: I am not responsible for your phone line problems… if you break it, it’s your fault not mine! Don’t call me! But… if it improves your broadband speeds too then let me know.. reply to this entry or something. Don’t forget to go to www.speedtest.net before and after to record your speeds.

Exams, bleurgh.

I did my first Open University exam on Monday and suddenly I remembered why I didn’t enjoy my A-levels all those years ago. Exams just don’t seem to bear any relevance, in my opinion, to the real world or anything I ever face in it other than possibly the dread of an impending deadline / the clock counting down to the end of the exam. The exam was very similar in content and length to the coursework assignments I had been given, only this time I had no external resources… all knowledge must be remembered, and only three hours in which to complete it. This is all obvious to most people who’ve taken university level exams I guess but I have so far managed to dodge that sort of thing. Previous courses and my HND were completed on coursework alone, and when I’ve taken exams for IT certifications the questions have been multiple choice or simulation based. Being asked to write x words on whether you thnk people in Ghana could benefit from Internet access causes serious hand cramp. Anyway, it’s over now and I’m getting in to the next course on Java programming. This course also has an exam and I’m very intrigued to see what the OU put in a written exam about computer programming, I’m expecting that bit to be quite a challenge as so far the coding aspects are very easy involving frogs and toads jumping, moving and dancing (yes, I’m not sure why either).

Broadband at last!

Phew, the sweat on my forehead is starting to subside as I am, at last, online good and proper. Well, sort of. I had an email from Tiscali earlier to say that the line has been activated and I should be getting my router in the post any day now. Fortunatly I have an old USB ADSL modem in the garage and have bodged it to work on my Vista laptop. The initial speed test says I have 3Mbps downstream which isn’t too shabby. I think I can improve that as I’m running off an extension which could be a little ropey. So… expect more inane ramblings from me in the coming days.

So far we’ve decorated two rooms in the house. The study, which I think I’ve mentioned before, is still waiting for furniture – hopefully any day now. I’ve also decorated the master bedroom… in a <lie mode> lovely shade </lie mode> of pink. I will counter balance that with a 32″ LCD TV within the next few weeks. I managed to get Sky to run a cable up to that room and I’ve put my old Sky box in there too as there were a number of ‘incidents’ involving a clash of viewing preferences with there being only one telly up and running. The guest room is also up and running.. we have our old double bed in there with some new curtains and bed linen – incidentally… our new king size bed with memory-foam layered mattress is going to take a bit of getting used to. It doesn’t cave in when you lie on it like a normal mattress would and when I lie on my side, my arms get squished in to me more than I’m used to, but still it’s much comfier than any other bed I’ve had. Jobs remaining to do are rebox some stuff in to smaller boxes to go in the loft which should hopefully leave the other spare room with only stuff for the study in, then it’ll be empty and ready to decorate as Poppy’s proper bedroom. We’ve also got to get some more storage to go in our wardrobe…. especially for shoes, Vicky has a whole large box of shoes yet to be unpacked. I think the next room she wants decorating though is the lounge, which is understandable really as the carpet does look a bit rusty (where the old occupants sofas were)… however I’ll need to put a new telly up on the wall first and feed cables through the walls before I decorate as the cable runs and mounting brackets will definitly damage the wall. In anticipation of the decorating I had to go purchase a new AV receiver quickly so as I’d only have to run minimal cables up to the telly. The new amp is an Onkyo TXSR606 and so far it’s pretty nice. You bung any input source you like in to it (S-video, component, composite, HDMI, optical/coax audio, analog etc…) and it’ll up-convert it and send it out the HDMI cable to the telly… pretty sweet so far. It even comes with a microphone which allows it to optimally configure it’s settings based on listening to the sound output from the speakers.

Right… quiz night tonight. Time to go get that chocolate.
